Highways tagged with highway=residential and something like ref=SR 1234 render too prominently. For example, here the residential ref's overwhelm the map and are far more prominent than the ref on the nearby highway=tertiary:

I would suggest the font size and width be decreased, equal to or lesser than the corresponding name labels. I don't think a shield is necessarily required.
