People misunderstand what the designation=* tag is for and so we get obviously wrong values entered such as names (designation=Masantol River).

I agree. Since this tag was added to the Potlatch interface, we've seen the proliferation of many inappropriate uses. I guess many less experienced users think they need to put something in the empty box, and the text that they enter often duplicates other (correct) tags such as name= or sport= or amenity=*.

Since the only well-used and generally accepted values for the designation=* tag correspond to UK public rights of way, would it be possible to change the potlatch interface to a drop-down for the four values: "public_footpath", "public_bridleway", "restricted_byway", and "byway_open_to_all_traffic" (in a simialar way to what potlatch shows for bridge= and oneway= ) instead of a free text box.

More advanced users could obviously still enter any value they feel appropriate through the advanced interface, but novices will be discouraged form mis-using the tag.

I'll be addressing this when I get a spare moment. There is no need to comment further.

Another, related, problem:

Potlatch shows the input field "Designation" for objects where it does not make sense, such as buildings or POIs. This is confusing and pointless, as "designation" only makes sense for ways. See e.g. http://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/11873/what-means-designation-in-potlatch2-building-preset

Should I file this as a separate bug?

I change the priority from "minor" to "major" since the misinterpretation of the tag "designation" is spreading quickly in the database.

How is this fixed? 'designation' can still be added to things like supermarkets with a freeform text input box. Or is it just fixed in a development version that still awaits release?

Reopening this as it doesn't seem to be fixed. Please either verify the fix or close as 'won't fix'.

Are there any news about this, please?
"Official classification" in the simple interface of Potlatch is generating so many wrong data in Brazil. People just don't read the explanation of this field.

I am still seeing a lot of misused designations in Brazil, for example.
