This is not an API change. Country codes got accidentally lost when the Nominatim database was re-imported two weeks ago.

While this bug is being fixed, you can point your software temporarily to the Nominatim instance of Mapquest. Country codes still work there. (http://open.mapquestapi.com/nominatim/v1)

Do you have an date on when this is fixed?

Which format is the preferred API? With country code appended in the q=, or with using countryCodes=
