Can I suggest that if a node is currently selected (after selecting a way that contains that node) that the 'F' key moves the selection to the next node in the way.
This is would move the selection using the same algorithm that the "follow" feature (also shortcut F) uses when drawing a new way over an existing way, but without modifying any ways or nodes.
