[landcover] USA Public land rendering

I am in the process of preparing an import for the state of Montana that will include public access land. This is land administered by various government entities that is considered to be owned by the public. As part of this upload I have noticed that there really isn't any way to handle public land other than mark it as a park or national forest. Neither of these is fully applicable to all of the data so I added another protect_class tag that I would like to see rendered.

I have some sample data that is located on the map at Of course it is not rendered yet, which is why I'm requesting this enhancement.

I have three distinct entities that I would like to have rendered. Each of these should be rendered as the bottom most layer. The three entities are: National Forest, Federal Land, State Land. It should be noted that this may need to be USA or North America specific.

My current problems with National Forest land are that everyone seems to be using "landuse=forest" in conjunction with boundary=national_park. Not all of the land within the National Forest is actually forest. "landuse=forest" should be able to be rendered on top of what I am proposing.

I'm basing my color scheme off of maps generated by state and federal agencies in my area. An example rendering that is fairly consistent between the printed maps can be seen here: This screenshot is captured from

Rendering: Same as

I found an object on the map that is rendered the way I envision things. Those were the relevant tags.

Federal Public Lands:

Rendering: Same as National Forest (above) with background color = #f9eeae

State Public Lands:

I agree that protect_area should be rendered.

However, you are effectively proposing to render protect_area in a different color depending on ownership. I don't think ownership is important enough to warrant a different color.

Therefore, I will close this issue as wontfix.
