It seems like almost every time I add a shop or amenity area I have to go into advanced view and add building=yes. It would be much better just to have a check box or "Building type, if it is one" menu available for shops and amenities.
Example: I add a restaurant node and expand it to a rectangle. Now there is no quick way to make it a building. Most restaurants where I live have their own building.

This area is a bit messy, because mapping practice varies considerably between regions. Technically speaking "amenity=restaurant" and "building=yes" are two unrelated tags...except of course in many cases they're connected.
In any case, your proposal to add at least a "building=yes" checkbox seems reasonable.
