[Submitted to the original trac issue database at 8.24pm, Wednesday, 19th September 2012]

If I search for: 4970 Cherry Ave, San Jose, CA
I get two results, both drastically wrong and without the property number

If I search for: 4970 Cherry Ave, San Jose, CA 95118
I get one result, and it's quite a few blocks down the road, also without the property number in the result.

If i search for: 4970 Cherry Ave Unit 114, San Jose, CA 95118
I get no results.

[Added to the original trac issue at 1.39am, Thursday, 20th September 2012]

There are no house numbers present in OSM for this entire area so you are just getting various street matches for different sections of Cherry Avenue.

Nominatim can only return data that is in OSM.
