Geometry output on the website has been fixed, you should see correct multipolygons now in all views.
When asking for xml/json, the polygon option will still not return a correct multipolygon. This won't fix for reason of backward compatibility. Try one of the new polygon options instead: polygon_geojson, polygon_kml, polygon_svg or polygon_text, which will return correct geometries, but be aware that they are still experimental at the moment. That means that the format might still change slightly.

when running the following query...
http://nominatim.openstreetmap.org/search.php?q=california,usa&polygon=1
i do not get the polygon on the map
when running http://nominatim.openstreetmap.org/search.php?q=california,usa&polygon=1&format=xml
i get an invalid polyon
however, when looking into california details
http://nominatim.openstreetmap.org/details.php?place_id=97717543
you do show the valid polygon
