Is there any way to reduce or eliminate the amount of space eaten up by the Languages bar at the top of each wiki page? Wikipedia puts this in the left-nav, which makes it much less intrusive on page content.
Bakcground:
Use of this code:
{{Languages|ns=|Main Page}}
at the top of many wiki pages ends up eating up a ton of valuable real estate at the top of each page - see:

Any alternative that reduces the amount of vertical screen space for this information would be great. For example, why not collapse the list by default, the same way "Other Languages" are currently collapsed by default.

Afaik there are plans to install the [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Translate Translate extension] along with the next Mediawiki upgrade. If the experiments with it go well, we could replace the existing translation templates with that system.
So fine-tuning the Languages template may not make much sense anymore. Moving this functionality to the sidebar now could even make a migration harder if it is implemented in such a way that it can no longer be edited by regular users, thus requiring admin intervention for each of the potentially frequent changes during that migration period.
