A recent change makes the map not stay centered when I zoom in/out using the mouse wheel in K-Meleon 1.5.3. It's an old browser (based on Mozilla 1.8), but this probably means that something's wrong with the code.

What do you mean by "stay centred" exactly?
I can't remember offhand exactly what OpenLayers did, but Leaflet seems to be behaving reasonably as far as I can see - it ensures that whatever point I zoom in on with the scroll wheel stays in view as I zoom in.

I've tried the old OL interface now (it's on http://notes.apis.dev.openstreetmap.org/) and it seems to behave in much the same way as Leaflet and keep the point the mouse is over at a fixed point in the view as you zoom in.

Yes, it does work properly in currwnt versions Firefox and IE. Both of those are more bloated than K-Meleon. Until the recent change, it worked fine in all those browsers. I see no improvements, only a slight difference in UI, so why was it changed in the first place?

Because somebody submitted a patch to change it and the consensus was that Leaflet is an improvement - it's smaller and works better on mobile devices.
