There is no need to have a leading or trailing whitespace character in the values of the tags.

Potlatch 2 doesn't remove theses characters before sending the values to OSM.

I believe it should, especially for the user-typed-in fields, typically "name".
For example : I tested that the name of the
[http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/1863746907/history node 1863746907] has a trailling whitespace, and that a edit session with Potlatch doesn't automatically remove it.
