In Germany, the license plate code is very often used; sometimes people refer to their own city by abbreviating its name with the license plate code (even speaking); reiseauskunft.bahn.de (a tool to look up train connections) can handle it, too. It would be really great if Nominatim could index the openGeoDB:license_plate_code=* tag (used nearly 14,000 times)!

I agree that the license plate codes are useful to be indexed but I'm not convinced that the openGeoDB:license_plate_code tag is the best way to go. I've moved that question to the talk-de mailing list.

It seems that Germany is more and more moving away from geographically fixed license plates, so consensus was not to have a specific license plate tag. Instead, just put the conventionally used abbreviations in the ref tag of the boundary relation of the county or city. Nominatim will pick them up from there.

Supporting openGeoDB:license_plate_code is not a good idea because it comes from a very old one-time import and is largely unmaintained.
