Description

This request originally started on the help side. The place names in Myanmar/Burmese? Unicode for the country of Myanmar in OpenStreetMap seem to have been typed correctly but the font being used for the OpenStreetMap is rendering them incorrectly.

Here is an example of what it should be for the capital of the country, Naypyidaw. နေပြည်တော် (as text) and as image: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35577327/correct-Burmese-rendering.png

Here is what it is currently: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35577327/current-incorrect-Burmese-rendering.png

This is almost certainly blocked on mapnik merging the harfbuzz work. Status on that seems to be being tracked at https://github.com/mapnik/mapnik/issues/1428.

The Mapnik component is for openstreetmap.xml, the old XML-based stylesheet, not openstreetmap-carto, which is currently used for the default layer on openstreetmap.org.

Openstreetmap-carto has an issue tracker at https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues.

This particular issue is being tracked at https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/392, but the real work on this is upstream in Mapnik.
