Whereas other mapping sites feature a zoom slider bar, osm.org only has + and -, so the user needs several more actions (clicks) to get his desired zoom.
(Yes he can also use his mouse wheel but that is besides the point.)

Tom, it would be nice if could you could provide a link to the relevant design decision discussion.
"shift click" and "shift-drag" - you made me laughing... And how should ANYONE know this? ;-) Update: oh, right, in the [https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Browsing inofficial documentation] the shift drag (zoom-in box) was already mentioned. I have added the shift click now.
Still, those are not replacing the zoom slider which also serves as a easily recognizable zoom-level indicator.
