#518 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Landsat background

Reported by: Bruce Cowan Owned by: richard@…
Priority: minor Milestone:
Component: potlatch (flash editor) Version:
Keywords: Cc: Cameron

Description

A landsat background layer would be useful for places which don't have Yahoo! coverage (which less face it is most of the world). In fact, it should be the default layer.

Implementing Landsat would require a whole new tiling engine for Potlatch, and is therefore outside the scope of immediate development. (The Yahoo background is implemented with the pre-built Yahoo component and therefore cannot be adapted.)

Long-term plans for Potlatch do include a tiled image background, principally for NPE scans, but this won't be for a good while.

Until then it's worth pointing out that the default Yahoo background (i.e. zoom level 13) is actually colour-corrected Landsat. A quick-and-dirty workaround which some people have tried is to use Flash's own right-click contextual menu to zoom in on this level, rather than Potlatch's own zoom control.
