#523 closed enhancement (fixed)

Parking symbol not rendered on parking areas in Osmarender

Priority: minor Milestone: Wishlist
Component: osmarender Version:

Description

Currently, osmarender does not render the parking symbol over areas tagged as amenity=parking. Mapnik does. It does, however, render the parking symbol on nodes tagged as parking.

This is no defect. Osmarender puts a parking symbol if you have a node with amenity=parking. it will only render the area if you have an area. so closing this one.

I disagree. Since the parking symbols are rendered on both areas and nodes tagged as parking in Mapnik, but only on nodes in Osmarender, it is difficult to make the map look correct on both. One must tag both the area and a node as amenity=parking, but then two parking symbols will be rendered in Mapnik. Alternatively, if I tag only the area as amenity=parking, a parking symbol will be rendered in Mapnik but not Osmarender, so the parking area cannot be identified. The rendering is only consistent on both Mapnik and Osmarender if you only include nodes which are tagged as amenity=parking, but do not include areas tagged as such.

I'm with Andrew - if you've marked an area then it's bonkers to also have to put a node in as well. I know people have been doing that recently for various area features, but I consider it a hack to work round deficiencies in renderers and I wish people wouldn't do it.

Tom, oh, I wasn't saying, I'd not prefer the way of rendering. I was saying, that it was most probably a concious choice of Etienne, so this would be no defect.

I'll ask 80n about this. If it is merely an oversight of a deficiency of the renderer, I'll see what can be done about it. It's an enhancement request in any case.

P.S. Yay first mail trac ever sent me. Makes it much more useful!

Here is Etiennes reply:

The Parking symbol is usually used to indicate *public* parking.

There are a lot of areas that are parking which are not open to the public
(parking at offices and factories), so it is wrong to render a parking
symbol on every area that is marked as parking.

So any landuse where cars are parked can be tagged as parking, but only
public parking should have a node with a parking tag.

This is not really ideal and the correct solution should be to have an
additional tag, such as public=yes that would then cause a symbol to be
added. I think there's a proposal on the wiki that covers multi-story,
park-and-ride and a host of other types of parking.

So this is a concious choice until a good way to indicate whether a parking area is public or not is found.

I would use access=private to mark private parking lots, assuming that they are public otherwise. I have started to mark some private parking lots as such. This, however, is not an officially recognized use of the tag.

Yes, this is how I would do it as well. 80n thinks this is backwards, however I failed to understand why. As to not being officially recognized: recognized is what is being done. There is no official right or wrong, and tagging them with access=private is exactly how I would handle this as well.

The remaining obstacle now is that Osmarender/t@h *cannot* put a symbol in the middle of an area yet. It works with text but not with symbols. So this has to be fixed anyway before something can be done about it.

I added this feature recently, so it's now possible. Discussion on ML about including icon on parking areas seems to give rather mixed feedback.

I added icons for parking areas in r6939, and it includes rules that say there must be either no access key, or access must be yes or public for the icon to show.
