This still seems to be an issue everywhere.
While I haven't been mapping private parkings much, I have mapped many with access=customers. The default OSM Carto style renders both private and customers-only parkings with a P icon with 33% opacity (search for "amenity_bicycle_parking" [https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/blob/master/amenity-points.mss here]). Switching to the default style is currently the only way a map user has to tell them apart without having to download the raw data.
There are many other such parkings nearby, some customers-only, some public. All are rendered exactly the same, yet I think most users would prefer to easily distinguish them.
