Create OpenLayers.Layer.OSM.Maplint. Similar to OpenLayers.Layer.OSM.Osmarender, but not a base layer, and the 404 handler should make missing tiles transparent.

Is the maplint layer actually reliable now then? Last time I looked at it lots of the tiles were not transparent so it was unusable.
Looks fine, I scrolled around large parts of Europe for a while and didn't see any problems like that.
One thing I noticed is that it does weird things in lowzoom (I don't think anybody even tries to make it work there), so it might be a good idea to look at the possibility to disable it for z<12. crschmidt figures it should be possible:

to do something like that, I think.

(In [6195]) Add a Maplint layer (OpenLayers.Layer.OSM.Maplint) class. Note that the
t@h server currently serves solid grey tiles for tiles which are not in
the database which limits the utility of this.
