building=* ref=something should render. Will have to offset it to get it away from rendering of name=.

Suggestions from Blackadder:

  • Same fontsize as copyright
  • Either black or same color as building casing

For areas, offset ref= rendering so it goes above name=. For nodes, offset both name= and ref= rendering to center around the node.

The following area contains residential buildings with nodes tagged with building= and ref= that can be used for evaluation: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=52.5543&lon=-1.82154&zoom=17&layers=0BF

Looks like you're trying to do house numbers that way. Why not use Karlsruhe Schema (see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/House_numbers/Karlsruhe_Schema) to do that?

I can see why that would be nice for buildings A through D on university campuses. But if it is used for house numbers there are two options: Either all refs have to look like house numbers or we will end up with house numbers in two different styles depending on the tagging scheme used.
