When trying to correct "leaking" water I always cut a closed way to two halves to see the direction of the loop. After that I can change directions and close the ways again. (Perhaps it's only me not finding the obvious)
Could the "closed way"-icon show the direction and change the direction when clicking?

This feature would also be extremely helpful for me when changing "landuse=forest/landuse=land" into multipolygon relations, as the renderers require clockwise or counterclockwise direction of the ways.
