The slip roads/ramps leading to and from major roads are typically narrower than the roads mainline and always less important from a mapping perspective. But because the current rules cause links to be rendered as wide as the mainline, the detail of junctions usually can't be seen without zooming in very close (and sometimes isn't clear even then).
I propose that links be shown as narrow as practical. Alternatively, if we wish to accurately render wider links where they exist, the width could be made dependent on the lanes attribute, defaulting to lanes=1.

Can you point to a zoom level and a spot where that still occurs? Browsing through the style sheets, things seem mostly fine to me. I'll close this one as worksforme soon if I don't hear anything back.
As far as I can see, no changes in the width of motorway_link or trunk_link have been attempted. Both appear to be rendered just as wide as motorway and trunk respectively, and my suggestion is that readability would be improved if they were made narrower.
