When I move the map view outside of the downloaded area, Merkaartor could start getting more map data after a short idle time (about 1 sec). This should be restricted to rather high zooms, z15 and up maybe.

If this is considered too much automatism, an alternative would be a shortcut for "download map for current view" - the dialog window you normally get should be disabled in that case.

Mmm... Could you please explain the rationale of the request?
Maybe propose this to the list first, that we can get some feedback.
