Right now, I can only use Ctrl to add to the current selection. In most software that I have used though, I can also do that with Shift. (FWIW, in JOSM, Shift always adds to the selection and never removes something, while Ctrl toggles.)

I agree that ctrl/shift behaviour should be more standard.

But hasn't Bart already added some function to shift-click?

Shift-click now prevents roads to be selected.
I agree it is quite counter-standards

Bart, would you mind changing this to something else? (crtl-shift-click? meta-click?)

(In [7505]) FIX : keyboard modifiers: ctrl-click toggle; shift-click add; ctrl-add-click prevents road selection; shift-drag selects features which intersects (closes #801)

I meant ctrl-ALT-click prevents road selection
