A lot of TIGER data appears to have surplus nodes on straight ways. These are a bit of a pain because they mean you have more nodes to move.
Potlatch could have a super-secret keypress ('S' maybe - this is a bit of a non-universal power-user feature so it doesn't matter too much if it's obscure) to remove any nodes from the way which aren't an intersection and which don't have interesting tags.
