Enter is usually used to accept and submit the values that are present in the input field. Usually this will send the whole form on a webpage, that's why you don't want to use it in Potlatch.

The auto complete is a bit non-standard. Currently only enter chooses the currently highlighted item and jumps to the next box. Usually in other applications tab does this too, and it must be dozens of times I've hit tab and then had to return to complete the tag name.

In other systems you usually have two sections in the input field. The first is what you wrote, and the second is the autocompleted part. This second section of the input field is selected which enables you to press Backspace, tab, todo what you do as just tab in potlatch.

This is a split up of ticket: #712

Please see http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2008-February/023738.html and the associated thread. It isn't "non-standard", there are two ways of doing this - Potlatch chooses to use "tab means move to the next field" (traditional Mac UI) rather than "tab means autocomplete" (traditional Unix shell UI), not least because hardcore Unix users will probably be using JOSM anyway. Google Maps autocompletes an address on tab and it annoys me intensely.

Besides, I'm not quite sure why having to press "backspace, tab" is an improvement over just pressing tab. ;)
